Best of all, this feature doesn’t annoy you with its pop-up content due to its slick production and setting an early precedent that all interruptions would be for something worthwhile.

There is a small amount of repeated interview clips from the other content, but in general this commentary is expansive and endearing.

This actually extends the length of the movie as sometimes the film cuts out altogether and moves to documentary footage and talking heads, but it’s an in-depth insight that was missing from the shorter featurettes. Here we get to see simultaneous footage of things like pre-viz, wire work, and behind-the-scenes filming alongside the finished film in addition to commentary. The real meat of the supplemental content comes in the form of “Journey of Discover: Creating Man of Steel,” a side-by-side documentary of sorts with the filmmakers and cast that takes you behind-the-scenes in a way that is far more engaging than the usual commentary track. The content is about what you would expect from such things there’s not a whole lot of valuable insight from the filmmakers, but the input from the cast (particularly Henry Cavill) is phenomenal and the behind-the-scenes footage is thorough. The other featurettes, “Strong Characters, Legendary Roles” and “All-Out Action,” each run about a half hour each and feature a slew of interviews from cast and crew covering the development process, training regimens, stunt co-ordination, costume design, and the approach taken to reimagining the Superman mythology. It’s a clever and different way of showing off concept art and the intensive care that went into creating the Kryptonian culture without it being just another talking head featurette. Keep your eyes peeled for Kandor, Wayne Enterprises, LexCorp, and more. It directly references the events of the film and speculates about Superman and Kryptonian culture, at once answering a few unanswered questions from the movie itself and providing a whole bunch of fun DCU references. My favorite piece of content in this set is the “Planet Krypton” documentary, which is built like a History Channel special you might see about Mars or some other distant planet. Another disappointment is the lack of trailers, but luckily the good outweighs the bad in this case.

There are a few stinkers – the 6-minute visual effects promo piece called “Krypton Decoded” hosted by 13-year-old Clark Dylan Sprayberry is clearly fluff that aired on TV someplace and is entirely useless, as is the bizarre inclusion of “New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth” from the Hobbit Blu-rays. If you’re a fan of the film, the supplemental content should deliver most of what you’re looking for. The audio and visual experience of the Man of Steel Blu-ray is truly fantastic. It’s the score that really shines though, with the thoughtful hum and thunderous percussion of Hans Zimmer’s music effectively lacing the experience with subtext and emotion.

For as loud and high-action as Man of Steel is, there is a surprising amount of quieter moments (particularly during younger Clark’s sequences) that are beautifully underlined by the sound design. Learning that Zod’s armor was entirely CGI made the insane on-screen detail all the more impressive.Īudio is the same the DTS-HD Mater Audio 7.1 is a gut-punch of the forceful harmonies of the score perfectly mixed with the world’s sound effects and dialogue. There are occasional moments where the transition is obvious and rubbery, but for the most part the entire experience is seamless and will leave you entrenched in the visuals that Snyder and company have concocted. Even the film’s heavy CGI looks great when it’s this sharp. The different color palettes of the movie shine in this transfer as well, from the earthy, organic tones of Krypton to the warm glow of Smallville to the concrete and steel of Metropolis to the blackness of space.
